couldn't agree more. i've watched 3 different people i work with buy new cars within the last month - i'm baffled.
You're not a jerk -- I hate hearing people in giant SUV's complaining about how "liberals" are preventing $1/gallon gas by not allowing more drilling or things like that. I have a V6 Accord that I hate filling up, and it "only" has a 17 gallon tank. I started riding my fixie to the bus stop for commuting to work. Since then I went from filling every week to filling every 2-3 weeks.
The only downside is the huge price jump between fillups :)
you are exactly right. people act like $1/gal. gasoline is in the constitution.
You're right, people are idiots who complain about sh*t they don't understand... Gas is way more expensive outside the US, the people here just think they have some right to cheap gas since our government has been giving oil companies tax breaks for so long... I think we all know that SUV makes you look fat! Ride a bike!
What do you expect when you build your house in the sand?
I agree with you. I just came back from Scotland where they're just happy to have access to gas... at like 9 bucks a gallon! Access to petroleum products are not a God-given right... and these same folks are happy to pay 3 bucks for 12oz of water in a bottle.
But yeah, I too am tired of hearing all this whiney nonsense. When it's efficient for me to do so, I ride my bike... otherwise I have to drive a car... a company provided car fueled by company provided gasoline... but you don't hear me bitching!
I'm selling my volkswagen golf.
I haven't bought gas for it since early March. I bike everywhere now.
My only problem is losing money on the car loan.
I'm with ya dude.
It was only last year that I was commuting 70 miles each way to work.
this might be the unfortunate truth ...
although there are more people using their bicycles (or other modes of transportation) to escape, or at least reduce the burden of rising fuel costs... all this is doing is minimally reducing the overall demand.
by not using gasoline or diesel, alternative forms of transportation are actually keeping the cost of fossil fuels down for those suv drivers (and other people who have to drive an automobile against their wishes.)
all of that from us, and a lot of them still hate us because they have to share the public roads with us.
irony? indeed!
I dont feel bad at all, I ride my Surly everywhere and when i have to use gas its a Civic with 138,000 miles on it that still gets 42 MPG so shit'll buff out.
i'm totally with you. the same people in london bitched about the mayor's plan to up the congestion charge for people driving 'chelsea tractors' (SUVs).
simple solution don't drive an off-road vehicle in london. it's retarded.
Dang right! And yeah, UK £1.30 a litre for fuel, when we see the USA whinging about $4 a gallon? Wah wah wah...
I like my bike. It runs on cake. I like cake. If i need to go further i take the train. Its not rocket science. New t-shirt: "Saving the planet for your fat lazy kids"... :D
It's okay, we'll just give all of our money to the middle east to buy their oil so they can come back as a financial super power and destroy the evil westerners. I have a car, I use my bike. Simple choice, it's cheaper and it's healthy. God forbid that the fattest country in the world lose some weigh and save money at the same time.
The same kind of complaint is happening in Australia (petrol is more expensive here, but still much cheaper than Europe), and it doesn't seem to push people into cycling. The news just talks about car pooling and public transport. I wonder if it is because our cities are so big, so sparse, that to commute by bike in them is just too much of a mental jump for some people.
